PIONEER - Madras City Hall.

Madras voters will elect an new mayor in November, and so far only one person has applied for the position.

Austin Throop has submitted an application, but needs to submit 20 signatures of support for his candidacy by Aug. 23.

Richard Ladeby plans to step down in December at the end of his second term as mayor.

"It's been a pleasure serving my community in various capacities over the last 14 years," said Ladeby this spring when he announced his decision. "While I will no longer be serving in official capacity, I'll still be involved with my community."

Three city council positions are also open for election this November. Rosalind Canga, who has served on the council since 2017, announced she will not run for another term.

In April, the City Council appointed Mike Seibold and Lamar Yoder to finish the terms of Bartt Brick and Royce Embanks Jr. Both Seibold and Yoder have applied to run for the positions they currently hold on the council. Yoder has collected his signatures and is a confirmed candidate. Seibold has applied and is currently collecting signatures.

Austin Throop briefly held a seat on the council. He took his oath in January of 2021, but resigned after two meetings when one of his social media posts stirred controversy. On Facebook Throop described fellow councilor Jennifer Holcomb and her fellow runners as "all pathetic terrorists" for not wearing masks after going on a run.
