The Madras Redevelopment Commission met Tuesday, Sept. 13 and approved funding for Initiative Brewing's expansion to Madras.

"I'm really excited about this; I fully support it. I love the glass façade, the patio. I think it's a great design," said commission member Gary Walker. "I think it's wonderful for the city."

The project addresses the number two project on the commission's 2015 action plan: recruiting a brewery. Initiative Brewing currently has a location in Redmond and plans to expand its brewing capacity as well as provide Madras with a restaurant and tap room.

"Initiative Brewing Madras is kind of what our vision was, and always has been," said Ryan Churchill, who co-owns Initiative Brewing with Chris Brumley. "We want to have a very large building that could support basically infinite growth for the brewery side and have a commercial kitchen that can service the needs of the community."

The commission's decision grants Initiative a $200,000 grant and a $600,000 line of credit to fund the needed renovations and improvements on the former Jefferson County Public Health building at Fourth and I streets.

The renovated building will feature a full brewery, commercial catering kitchen, an over 2,000 square-foot taproom and two outdoor seating areas. They plan to move some brewing and kitchen staff to Madras, and at full capacity expect to bring 47 full time jobs to the community.

"We'll have the Brewed in Madras logo on our cans, and you'll be able to buy it, you know, in Portland or on the Coast or in Southern Oregon, wherever," said Churchill. "We were excited to put Madras on the map in beer. With some of the best water in the world, I think it's going to make our beer taste even better."

The team hopes to open in theummer of 2023 after renovations are complete.
