Investigation closes the highway for four hours at Northeast Poplar Street

A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on the north end of Madras Saturday night.

Albert Lloyd French III, 70, was walking along U.S. Highway 26 near Northeast Poplar Street Nov. 12, when a car struck him. French died at the scene.

The accident happened at about 7:23 p.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates Stuart Smith, 23, of Warm Springs, was traveling northbound on Highway 26 in a maroon Chevrolet Impala when he hit French. Authorities closed the highway for four hours to investigate the circumstances around the accident. No charges were announced.

French was a guest of the homeless warming shelter operated by the Faith Based Network on Nov. 9, the first night they opened for the winter season.

Oregon State Police were assisted by Madras Police and the Oregon Department of Transportation. No other details of the incident were released.
