The 45th Cowdeo will offer kids ages 5 to 14 plenty of rodeo action during two performances at the fairground’s Corwin Arena on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Kids compete in four age divisions for belt buckles in each event, with an all-around belt buckle and saddle as the grand prize.

The performances are at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Oct. 19, with identical events. The action includes sheep riding, barrel racing, keyhole race, horseless roping, calf riding, breakaway roping, cow riding, goat decorating, and a chicken and rabbit scramble.

Signups begin at 9 a.m., Sept. 23-Oct. 9, or until the events are full. Cowdeo draws young competitors from Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Idaho each year. Visit or call the fair office at 541-325-5050 for registration information.

The Cowdeo began in 1968 as a fundraiser for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. In 2003, the fairgrounds took over the event and used it as a fundraiser for the fair and other local groups.

Past benefactors have included Volunteers of the Jefferson County Fire Department, Culver FFA Alumni, Culver Parent Club, St. Patrick’s Youth Group, and the Central Oregon High School Rodeo Team.
