North Unit crews are installing the new pipeline.North Unit Irrigation District recently received $200,000 in funding from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to continue work on the 58-11 irrigation canal piping project.

The district has also been recommended for a grant of $200,000 from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, and has applied for funding of $100,000 through Portland General Electric to further the lateral 58-11 project.

The funds will enable North Unit to install an additional 2,400 feet of 48-inch, high-density polyethylene pipe. In 2012, the district installed 2,400 feet of the pipe, which will provide better water pressure to water users when the project is complete.

Work began early in November, and will be completed by the end of March.

The piping project eliminates the water seepage losses that open canals experience. This provides water conservation benefits, and minimizes or eliminates energy consumption for irrigation systems on the 58-11 delivery system.
