George Clooney, Brad Pitt and a German thriller will be featured in the January movies at the Jefferson County Library Film Center.

All movies are shown for free at 7:30 p.m., in the Rodriguez Annex at 134 S.E. E St., Madras, and refreshments are available.

Friday, Jan. 10, “The Descendants” (R). Set in Hawaii and starring George Clooney, this movie is about a land baron who tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.

Friday, Jan. 17, “Barbara” (PG 13). A German drama directed by Christian Petzold, “Barbara” won the best director award at the International Berlin Film Festival in 2012. It is a type of resistance movie, where the main character pushes back against totalitarianism.

“Barbara” is a simmering, impeccably crafted Cold War thriller about a woman doctor who is banished to a rural East German hospital as punishment for applying for an exit visa. As her lover from the West plans her escape, Barbara waits patiently and avoids friendships with her colleagues, except for Andre, even though she suspects he is working with the German Stasi.

Friday, Jan. 24, Moneyball (PG 13). With Brad Pitt in the leading role, the film follows the Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players.
