Imagine a crowd of shoppers, with cash in their pockets, all mobbing the same store at the same time – that’s a Cash Mob – and one is about to strike Madras.

The event is being organized via email by Troy Boyd, owner of Great Earth Natural Foods, who said she got the idea from a Cash Mob group in La Grande which has grown to include 260 members helping to encourage businesses in their downtown area.

“It’s something fun to do, and a way to support local businesses and give them a little shot in the arm,” Boyd explained.

Madras’ first Cash Mob plans to swarm a retail shop in the downtown area on Fifth Street, from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, March 15. Usually, the event is kept a secret from the business.

Boyd has sent email notices to a wide range of local people, and is hoping to get 25 to 30 people to sign up to participate.

She plans to do a Cash Mob hit quarterly, for service organizations as well as retail businesses.

“It could be someplace like the food bank, where everyone would show up and give them food,” she said.
