Open to all students in grades six through eight, the theme for the Patriot Pen 2017-18 essay was "America's Gift to my Generation."

At Culver Middle School, the first-place award went to Tegan H. Macy.

Tegan was entered into the District 10 competition, which covers Central Oregon, where she also took first place.

She is now eligible to represent District 10 in the state competition. If successful there, she will be entered into the national competition against winners of the other states.

Also from Culver Middle School, was Jenna A. Dicintio, who placed second in the Post 12141 competition, and also placed fourth in the District 10 phase.

"We would like to thank all the students from Madras and Culver middle school who found time to enter and write wonderful essays. The theme for the 2018-19 competition will be announced in the spring, so be looking forward to entering," said VFW Commander Leonard Hellwig.

VFW Post 12141 also announced the winner of the 2017-18 Teacher of the Year competition. The post selected Culver Middle School citizenship education teacher Mark Habliston.

"Congratulations to Mark on the find job he brings to the students and to the community," Hellwig said.
