Service projects being planned in Madras and Warm Springs; still time to sign up.

Local residents have the chance to join several community service projects happening in Madras and Warm Springs in observance of Jan. 15, as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

This year, Volunteer Central Oregon will host 14 MLK Day projects with nonprofit groups in Madras, Warm Springs, Bend, Sisters and Prineville. To sign up, go to and click on the green bar labeled MLK Jr. Day of Service 2018.

In Madras, volunteers from "The Zone" group of the Kids Club of Jefferson County, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers will meet at East Cascade Assisted Living, 175 NE 16th St., Madras, to help clean and organize, dust, vacuum and more for the retirement community.

In Warm Springs, a clean-up crew will work from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., installing ceiling boards at the Warm Springs Emergency Management Facility, at 1116 Wasco Street.

The Warm Springs Community Action Team will do two projects. From 9 a.m. to 5 p., volunteers will work to make rehab houses livable, including doing sheetrock repair, flooring and interior painting. In a project at 2321 Ollallie Lane, volunteers will clean interior hallways and rooms and outside recreation areas of the retirement center, High Lookee Lodge.
