Trail restored for Eagle Scout project
Clearing and restoring a section of the Willow Creek Trail was the project selected by Madras High School senior Vincent Boice to earn his Eagle Scout badge.
Vincent planned and coordinated the work, which involved a crew of 10 scouts from Troop 27 in Redmond. The Willow Creek Trail runs around 7 miles from Madras to Lake Simtustus.
"On Oct. 7, we pulled sagebrush on the sides of the trail, which had also become a fire hazard because it was so densely packed," he said, adding, "We cleared 1 1/2 to 2 miles of trail, and moved boulders that had fallen down into the road and several trees that were growing too close to the trail."
He also planned meals, which were cooked at Gladys Grant's ranch and a camping experience.
"We cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner at Gladys Grants. We had a campout on Friday, then went to work on the trail Saturday," he said.
Boice joined scouts 6 1/2 years ago, while living in Oklahoma, and has been active in the program ever since.
