The newly hired director resigned his position due to family reasons before getting to Madras.

PIONEER LOGO - The recently hired library director resigned before arriving in Madras. The Jefferson County Library has been in transition with previous library director, DeRese Hall, retiring in mid-April and a new director set to arrive at the end of April. Just over a week ago, the new director resigned.

Originally planning on being present for the April 26 Coffee Cuppers, hosted by the library district, the selected director from North Dakota called several days prior and due to family reasons, resigned his position before ever arriving.

The library board chairman, Stephen Hillis, announced the news at the Coffee Cuppers event that was originally set to be the director's introduction to members of the community. Following the announcement, Hillis recognized the library staff and volunteers who have been working to keep things running smoothly, despite a lack of director.

Hillis said Monday that the board would meet in an emergency session that afternoon to determine what their next step would be. He said that during their initial search, the board had several strong candidates and said they would discuss in their meeting whether or not to offer the position to one of them or open the search back up.

Another topic of discussion for the board is what to do in the meantime. Hillis said the staff is stepping up to get things done, but there is no director in the building — no one in charge — and the board needs to decide what to do about that until a director can be found.

Originally, the new director planned to be in Jefferson County at the beginning of April and work with the previous director, Hall, to get though the transition. That start date was then pushed back to the later part of April and Hall, who was already semiretired, working only part time in her final weeks, fully retired mid-April as planned.
