Dayton artist at gallery
Home Grown, an exhibit of art by Richard Thompson, opens at Art Adventure Gallery on Thursday, June 6, coinciding with the Madras Downtown Association's First Thursday Park and Play event for the month of June.
A Dayton, Oregon, resident, Thompson focuses on rural environments and farm land in his works, according to Coralee Popp of Art Adventure Gallery. He uses earthy colors and linear structure to portray the simplicity of the spaces he paints.
The exhibit opening reception runs 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday and the artist will be present as locals view his works.
Art Adventure Gallery is located on Fifth Street and offers a different exhibit each month. The gallery is staffed entirely by volunteers and Popp said they are struggling to find a new generation of volunteers to help run the gallery.
As people get older or move away, she said they are losing volunteers, without whom the gallery cannot run.
Art Adventure plays an important part in showcasing local art, often issuing "calls to artists," as well as featuring student art from the local schools and bringing in exhibits from artists outside of the community.
For more information about the opening reception or to find out how to volunteer, stop by the gallery at 185 SW Fifth St., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, or by appointment, or call 541-475-7701.
