JENNIFFER GRANT/MADRAS PIONEER - Luminaria are on display at a previous ceremony at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.A special Luminaria Ceremony to be held July 13, during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Jefferson County will remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived.

Luminaria will be lit at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on that Saturday, at dark, normally around 10 p.m., to represent those individuals.

Anyone desiring to make a luminaria donation may do so by contacting Christie Bouvia at 541-460-9604 or Jenniffer Grant at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., o by visiting Each luminaria bag is $5.

"Each luminaria represents the life of someone who has battled cancer, or supported someone with cancer. It is a beautiful sight when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track," said Christie Bouvia, volunteer luminaria chair. "The Luminaria Ceremony is a moving way to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to pay tribute to cancer survivors."

Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.

Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and provides participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease — all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society's vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Prior to the Luminaria Ceremony, at the opening ceremony Saturday morning, the Survivors Lap will kick off the 2019 Relay For Life event, as survivors and caregivers circle the track, surrounded by friends and family cheering them on.

Information about making a luminaria donation, forming a team or walking in the Survivors Lap is available by calling Shari Durgan at 541-475-6665, or visiting
