"Cancer: not here, not there, not anywhere," is the saying for this year, going along with this year's Dr. Seuss theme.

The annual fundraiser raises awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for the disease. From the start of the event to the end — a full 24 hours —people of all ages walk a track at the fairgrounds in teams to raise money. Each year, pledges are taken for laps walked.

Registration and the reception for survivors and caregivers will begin at 9 a.m., on Saturday and at 10 a.m., opening ceremonies will officially kick off the event with Jefferson County Veterans of Foreign Wars presenting the colors, music, introductions and honoring of survivors and caregivers along with the survivor honoree, Rebekah Picard. There will also be introductions and a parade of teams during the opening ceremonies.

Throughout the 24-hour nonstop event, there are lots of opportunities for fun, as well as helping the important cause, including different team activities, such as bunco, a Dr. Seuss Character Contest and frozen T-shirt contest, in addition to group Pictionary, a team trivia contest and bingo.

A special part of the event each year is the annual Luminaria Ceremony. This year, the ceremony is in memory of Rick Ridgeway and will be held at 10 p.m. Saturday night. Hand-decorated luminaria light up the dark fairgrounds, each bag representing someone lost to cancer.

According to the Relay For Life of Jefferson County tracker on the American Cancer Society's website, as of Monday, the fundraiser had brought in $47,412.87 for this year's effort.
