VFW Auxiliary puts together stockings for VA Medical Center
When Jan McDonald got a request from the Roseburg VA Medical Center for Christmas stockings, she thought it was doable for the VFW Auxiliary Post 12141 of Madras, of which she is president.
Auxiliary members quickly gathered plenty of fabric and scissors and got to work cutting.
Next, they needed to find machines and seamstresses to sew the pieces together. Auxiliary Senior Vice President Pat Meisner reached out to her sisters for assistance.
All of her sisters and sister-in-law have lots of sewing experience and were delighted to be able to help the Auxiliary with the project.
So they gathered their machines and got to work.
"Our dad and two uncles all served in the Navy during World War II," they said in a news release, "so we feel honored to be able to help bring a little joy to veterans.
The final count was 305 stockings.
"It was enough to provide a stocking for every veteran that was associated in that health care system," Meisner said. "We were pretty excited to do the job."
According to McDonald, the sisters volunteered to sew all of the stockings.
The project fit well with the Auxiliary's mission, which is to help veterans and their families. They are a group of men and women who have a family that has served in a foreign war.
