Antojitos Family Restaurant gets a second chance after closing for the pandemic

TERESA JACKSON/MADRAS PIONEER - Antojitos owner Ana Delia Pacheco opened the restaurant just two days before Gov. Kate Brown ordered the closure of restaurants statewide due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you're craving seafood with a Mexican flair, Antojitos Family Restaurant has you covered.

"Here in Madras, we do not have any seafood restaurants," said Ana Delia Pacheco, who opened the new Mexican seafood eatery this spring next to Motel 6 on Highway 97.

In Spanish, "antojitos" means "cravings."

"I was always craving seafood dishes, so I thought, why not 'Antojitos'?" she said.

It also has traditional Mexican entrees such as fajitas, flautas, tostados, tacos and tamales.

Pacheco said molcajete de mariscos, the house special, seems to be popular. The dish includes shrimp, fish, octopus, scallops, crab legs and Antojitos' special sauce.

The aguachiles entrée is another favorite, featuring marinated shrimp in fresh lime juice and green chile, served with red onion, cucumber and avocado.

"Let's not forget our popular alcoholic beverage 'La Diva,'" Pacheco said.

Antojitos offers a variety of alcoholic drinks, such as the new mango and chile-lime mangonada and Modelo beer.

Its food and produce are delivered from outside the area.

"I come from a family that likes to cook, so my family would have their own food stands in Mexico, and I would work there as well," she said.

She opened Antojitos Family Restaurant March 14 – just two days before Oregon establishments had to close because of the pandemic.

Pacheco said the beginning was pretty rough, but she's thankful that the Jefferson County Health Department was able to provide some financial support.

"We were only able to open for two days and then had to shut down due to COVID-19. We were devastated when we heard the news that we had to close our doors and have our employees on temporary leave," she said.

They were able to open again in mid-May, and business started picking up. They now offer dine-in and take-out services.

"We were able to give our employees their jobs again and even hire new employees," Pacheco said. "We separated our tables 6 feet apart from each other and are here to serve you."

She now has nine employees, including some of her family members.

Antojitos opens at 11 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday and closes at 8 p.m. except for Friday and Saturday, when they're open until 10 p.m.

Pacheco thanks those who have visited her new restaurant.

"Thank you for all the support here at Antojitos. It's very much appreciated," she said. "We encourage you to give us a try. Our dishes are distinctive from other restaurants, and we hope you like them."
