Windy Dethman opens Windy's Salon De Beaute in Madras as a way to honor her late son's life

HOLLY SCHOLZ/MADRAS PIONEER - Windy Dethman opened Windy's Salon De Beaute in September on Southeast Sixth Street. She and her friend Lolita Loredo offer a full line of cosmetology services. Pictured left to right, Dethman, her granddaughter Carolina and Loredo.

Last fall, Windy Dethman couldn't face life.

Her 26-year-old son had passed away from heart disease in early October, and coming home from his funeral, she and her family were involved in a fatal car accident.

"You want to just curl up in a ball and disappear when you have that kind of loss," the Culver woman said. "I just stayed home."

She had worked at a hair salon in Culver, but after her son's passing and the trauma from the car accident, taking clients was just more than she could handle, so she left her job. But in the spring, she started doing a few cosmetology services from home.

"I kept thinking I wanted to honor my son's life in some way, and I kept praying and asking the Lord, 'How can I best honor his life?' because he wouldn't want me wrapped up in my bed all the time and to not live," Dethman shared.

Pieces began to come together.

"It was like the Lord said, 'He would not want you to live this way. He was passionate about life,' and that was the message I got – live passionately and honor his life and his memory," she said.

She knew her passion but needed to rediscover it.

With guidance from a real estate agent friend, Dethman began looking for a home for her new salon business. She found the perfect place.

Earlier this month, Dethman opened Windy's Salon De Beaute in downtown Madras as a way to not only pursue her passion but to honor Chris.

She began renovating the building, which most recently served as an office. She repainted the inside white, powder pink and sage green, and updated the electricity and plumbing.

Windy's Salon De Beaute is French for Windy's Beauty Salon.

"I wanted it to be more than Windy's Beauty Salon — I wanted it to sound pretty," Dethman said of the business name.

Her good friend and fellow cosmetologist Lolita Loredo, of Madras, is joining her in the salon.

They will host a grand opening from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in the new salon at 72 SE Sixth St., which is across the street from the post office.

Dethman and Loredo plan to play some games, serve cake and refreshments, and give out certificates and discounts for services during the grand opening.

The two ladies are fully licensed in hair, skin and nails. They do hair, manicures, pedicures, gel nails, facials, waxing and skin care. Appointments are required because of the pandemic mandates, but eventually they hope to be able to take walk-ins.

They will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Dethman encourages local ladies to come to the open house next week to see the new salon and make an appointment.

"It's clean, we're very professional, it's comfortable, and we keep our service prices at a place where the average person can afford it," Dethman said.

And, she'll be living passionately.

"All the pieces fell into place for this little place, and I've poured my heart and soul into renovating and trying to honor Chris the best way that I can in this life," she said.
