Imagine a parade where instead of festive floats moving slowly along the street through town, spreading holiday cheer to folks on sidewalks, the spectators drive past floats at the fairgrounds.
No need to imagine it – just come on down to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on Saturday evening, Dec. 5 for the Christmas Lights Static Parade in COVID-19 style.
"Addressing COVID concerns, uncertainty of the length of the current freeze implemented by Gov. Brown, and the want to make sure we still have the annual holiday event, the chamber staff and the board of directors have dialed in how to make it happen," said Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Joe Krenowicz. "This year's Christmas Lights Parade will be pivoted this year to a drive-thru static parade of entries at the JC Fairgrounds."
The 2020 Christmas Lights Static Parade with the theme "Holly Jolly" will happen from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the fairgrounds.
Community members, businesses and groups interested in entering a float in the static parade must sign up no later than 3 p.m. the day before the parade, Friday, Dec. 4, at the chamber office.
Krenowicz said thanks to Jefferson County Fairgrounds Coordinator Brian Crow, the drive-thru event will accommodate the anticipated number of vehicles, and the fairgrounds have more than enough space for unlimited entries. There will be one entry point, a one-way route, a visit with Santa lane, and one exit point. They encourage all spectators to utilize the Culver Highway and Fairgrounds Road to access the annual chamber event.
"With a drive-thru event, keeping families together within their own vehicles and minimizing the intermingling of spectators and parade participants, the event can assist in following the Stay Safe physical distancing guidelines," Krenowicz said.
The static parade will include a Drive-up and Visit with Santa Claus lane for kids to make their wishes and receive a candy cane from Santa.
With this change up, the chamber is asking for all who are wanting to be in the Christmas Lights Static Parade to pre-register so they can have entry numbers with information to include in the parade chart that will be handed out to all of the parade spectators coming through the gate.
Krenowicz said the new parade plans are with the intent and hope that all Jefferson County citizens will be able to enjoy the holidays with a minimum of health challenges.
"We are looking forward to seeing everyone the first Saturday in December at 5 p.m.," he said.
