All children are welcome to free a breakfast and lunch on scheduled school days at school sites and several bus stops around the county.
The Jefferson County School District 509-J Food Services Meal Program will resume Monday, Nov. 30 and continue through Friday, Dec. 18 when schools close for winter break.
The free meals will be provided as a grab-and-go, or as a drive-thru to any child 18 years and younger, regardless of which school district or county they are from.
The child must be present to receive meals, or parents and guardians may pick up meals with a signed document provided.
Families may pick up the two meals for each child each morning. Hours vary for each bus stop, with some available as early as 6:30 a.m. to as late as 8:45 a.m.
Meals are not provided during Thanksgiving and winter breaks.
Since March when the Jefferson County School District Food Services Department began providing meals for local children, they have delivered and served 180,856 meals, reported district Food Service Supervisor Patti Jobe.
It is part of the Summer Food Service Program, and the meal schedule is on a national website so visiting families and those traveling through can find the local meal site program.
"Serving nutritious meals in our community to help support families in this unfortunate situation is so important," Jobe said. "I don't want any child to go hungry, and I want to take the stress off of family's schedules so their children are fueled and ready to learn."
