Throughout the pandemic, the library team has worked tirelessly to create relevant programs and community outreach

April 4-10, 2021, was National Library Week, and the theme was Welcome to Your Library! The programming team scheduled a variety of activities to celebrate libraries and reading.

One of the best activities was getting all the great notes on why people of Jefferson County love their library.

The JCLD advertisement in the Pioneer was a great way for us to gather feedback. The notes received were shared with our staff; it was uplifting to hear the love and support that so many of you shared with us. Some of the responses by library users are shared here.

There is always a great book or interesting magazine to enlighten my mind. – Ray.

I love my library because everyone who works here or volunteers is always ready to assist/help. – Mischa

It is clean and orderly. There are always fun activities and crafts for my kids to do. I love the renovations! – Miriam

The staff is pleasant and helpful. Their sense of community is appreciated. They are always ready to laugh or give a smile, even in tough times. – Scott

Making my new love of reading affordable, and during COVID 19, I get to escape and go on an adventure. Plus, we get to watch some good movies and have movie nights. It has become my new favorite place to visit. – Deborah

The employees are so very, very helpful and cordial in their people skills. – Terry

Great place to read the paper; check out good books and videos! – Paul

It's clean, it's organized, the staff is pleasant and helpful, the computer and technology/printing resources are great, and the selection is superb! – Stephen

You all have wonderful customer service. I felt 100% welcomed. Thank you so much. – Kayla.

It provides me a respite from the world. – Dan

The people – they are like family, smiling and always welcoming and helpful. The books – great selection, and I can order books from other libraries in the area. I love learning from books and videos. The mind is truly a gateway to freedom, and my Madras Library gives me the key to unlock any door. Thank you! – Rebecca

I love this library! They have such wonderful and helpful staff, and they really care about the people in the community. Keep up the good work. – Tina

I love the way they have dealt with the last year. Storytime, options for different age groups, book ideas, craft kits, "on the go trips," updates to the building, etc. – Nancy.

All of us at the library are genuinely honored to be a pivotal part of this community. Thank you for your confidence in us.

Changing times / changing colors

If you have recently dropped off books in our book drop, you have noticed the different paint swatches on the back wall. The library's next project is repainting the building and refreshing the outside landscaping. We are asking for feedback to help with color selections. The colors are numbered, and you can vote by honking your horn to identify your choice. It is great fun hearing the car horns honk for their favorite, and then someone will say, "There's a vote for number X." Thank you to all who have provided feedback. Stay tuned for the outcome.

One of our goals this year is to increase our partnerships with the community. I hope many of you participated in the "Finding Clues with Nancy Drew," a month-long project that the library co-sponsored with Sew Deeliteful Quilt Shop. With the help and support from the Madras Downtown Association and other local businesses, we are working on a downtown Madras Storybook Walk for June. If there are different creative ways your library can partner with your organization/company, give the library a call, 541-475-3351 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. The library team has been cranking up its creative thinking, and we are always open to new events and program ideas. Throughout the year, the team has worked tirelessly to create relevant programs and community outreach, even though hindered by COVID restrictions. When I arrived here almost two years ago, I had a clear vision for this library: a welcoming community center and information hub with a robust website. I see us moving forward to realize that vision every day.

Speaking for the staff and board of directors, thank you for your kind words about the library and the love and support we feel from this community. The library is not about us – it is about the community we serve. Your feedback helps us stay relevant.

You count on us to stay informed and we depend on you to fund our efforts. Quality local journalism takes time and money. Please support us to protect the future of community journalism.
