Madras High handed out its winter sports awards at the annual banquet last month.

All varsity letter winners in basketball, wrestling, swimming and cheer were recognized as were players that received Tri-Valley Conference selections.

Each coach of the winter sports also handed out individual team honors.

For boys basketball, coach Allen Hair announced that Jered Pichette was the White Buffalos’ Player of the Year, with Reshaun Holliday receiving an honorable mention.

In girls basketball, co-head coach Zach Lillebo honored Mariah Stacona as the Buffs’ Player of the Year, while Vanessa Esquivel was an honorable mention.

Madras wrestling coach Ron Oliver handed out his awards for outstanding freshman, Jace Oppenlander, outstanding sophomore, Andy Palomo, outstanding junior, Jarred DuPont and outstanding senior, Ian Oppenlander. Trever Parsons was named most improved.

MHS athletic director Rory Oster announced the winners of the White Buffalo Award, which went to Ian Oppenlander and Miguel Sevilla.

Pichette tops conference list

Madras junior Jered Pichette was named as the Tri-Valley Conference’s Player of the Year for the 2013-14 basketball season.

Pichette was one of five juniors to be named to the conference’s first team and was joined on the list by teammate Reshaun Holliday, a senior who was an honorable mention selection.

Pichette led the White Buffalos to a 10-14 overall record, while Madras finished fourth in the conference at 3-7.

Joining Pichette on the first team are Keeston Smith and Reece Wible of La Salle, Handsome Smith of Gladstone and North Marion’s Kerry Cook.

La Salle coach Jared Curtiss was named the conference’s coach of the year.

Brunoe Memorial Tourney set

The Sean X. Brunoe Memorial Men’s Slowpitch Softball Tournament will be held April 26-27 at Juniper Hills Park off of East Ashwood Road in Madras.

The double elimination tourney will have jackets for the championship team members and hoodies for the runners-up. There is a $250 entry fee per team.

5K Fun Run taking entrants

The Movin’ Mountains Mudslinger 5K Fun Run or Walk will be held April 12 at the Madras Aquatic Center.

The Mudslinger is free to registered Movin’ Mountains and Family Fitness Challenge participants. Non member cost is $5 for in-district participants and $10 for out-of-district.

There will be prizes for the first-place male and female finishers in both the run and walk categories.
