The 2013-2014 sports season has come to an end and while it was a solid one for Culver High athletes on their fields of play, the Bulldogs may have scored even better off the field.

The boys baseball team and the girls track and field team topped off the sports season by placing in the top 10 in Class 2A/1A in overall team grade point average, earning academic all-state status for the spring. A minimum team GPA of 3.0 must be earned to receive all-state status.

Among teams garnering all-state status, Culver finished off the sports year with five teams earning all-state academic honors and had a sixth team that just missed out. Madras ended the year with one team receiving academic all-state status.

The academic all-state program, sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon, recognizes outstanding achievement in the classroom by student athletes in all six classifications in a variety of sports and activities. Each team sport that the Oregon Schools Activities Association sanctions that earns a top 10 placement for the highest team grade point average earns the Academic All-State Award.

Each member of the team with the highest team GPA in each sport in its sport receives a Dairy Farmers of Oregon "got milk?" sweatshirt, commemorative pin and a certificate. The school receives a plaque in honor of its team’s accomplishment.

Members of top 10 schools in each activity at each classification are also recognized with a commemorative pin by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon and the OSAA.

All teams that earn a 3.0 GPA or higher receive 25 points for their school in the Oregonian Cup standings, while a list of all teams with a 3.0 GPA or higher is also posted to the OSAA website.

Both the Bulldogs’ baseball and girls track teams finished off the spring season with the second highest GPA in Class 2A in their respective sports. The baseball team produced a GPA of 3.46, while the girls track team combined for a GPA of 3.91.

The Culver girls fastpitch team recorded a team GPA of 3.12, but was not in the top 10.

The spring sports continued on a tradition of high team finishes that started in the fall as the Bulldog volleyball team topped 2A with an astounding 3.97 team GPA. The winter season saw the Culver girls basketball team produce the second highest grade score at 3.86, while the wrestling team carried the sixth-best GPA with a solid 3.08.

Madras scored its best team GPA finish in the fall, when the White Buffalos’ volleyball team had Class 4A’s ninth highest GPA with a 3.60.

With spring points totals still to be added up, Culver was in the top 20 in Class 2A in the Oregonian Cup standings, while Madras was in the top 35 in 4A.
