Culver junior earns OWF award following 40-2 season and third straight state title.

WILL DENNER/MADRAS PIONEER - Lorenzo Vasquez won his third state title in 2018, beating Myrtle Point's Tyler Huerta in the 120-pound division to finish the year 40-2.Three-time state champion Lorenzo Vasquez can claim yet another feat for his junior season at Culver.

Vasquez was selected as 2A/1A Wrestler of the Year by the Oregon Wrestling Forum, after a season in which he went 40-2, undefeated in the state of Oregon, and won his third straight state championship, this time in the 120-pound division, against Myrtle Point's Tyler Huerta.

Vasquez's season put him in rare company among Bulldog greats, past and present.

In addition to his third state title, Vasquez became the first-ever Culver wrestler to capture a win at the Reser's Tournament of Champions, which features top programs from around the state, regardless of classification. He won all five of his matches across the Jan. 19-20 tournament.

And, in the context of Culver's program, Vasquez's third state championships put him on a short list of Bulldogs who won three or more titles. That group includes four-timers Miguel Baltazar and Jared Kasch, plus J.D. Alley, Marco Retano, Clay McClure, Jorge Olivera, who also joined the club this season, and Vasquez.

Vasquez is now in position to chase title number four next season as a senior.

Other OWF Wrestlers of the Year are North Salem's Ein Carlos (6A), Crater's Logan Meek (5A), Marshfield's Travis Wittlake (4A), Harrisburg's Dax Bennett (3A) and Central Linn's Sarah Connor (girls).
