Culver baseball sweeps Grant Union
Culver baseball won both of their games Saturday, April 7, in Culver. They played a double header against Grant Union. They won the first game 7-6 and the second game 7-5.
The games were filled with roaring winds, but that did not stop the Bulldogs.
In the first game, Cole Little and Jamal Ortiz took to the mound for the Bulldogs and had a combined total of seven strikeouts. Little had four strikeouts through five innings and Ortiz had three strikeouts to close out the last two innings.
The Bulldogs were down 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cole Little stepped up to the plate. Little hit a ball down the third baseline for a single. Cord Gomes was walked to put two runners on base.
Grant Union overthrew the third baseman on a steal, leading the Bulldogs to score two runs.
After a couple of walks, Joe Russo was up to bat. Russo drove in two more runs with a grounder up the middle to put Culver in the lead 7-6.
In the top of the seventh inning, Grant Union had the bases loaded with one out. Pitcher Ortiz had a grounder hit right back to him. Ortiz threw to home plate for an out and the catcher, Russo, threw to first for a double play to end the game.
Cole Little and Cord Gomes went two-for-three. Russo ended the game a hit and two RBI's.
The second game had sophomore Cord Gomes on the hill. Gomes had six strikeouts through six innings.
Tadd Anderson helped Culver get a victory with two hits in four at bats. Anderson also, scored three times for the Bulldogs.
Little and teammate Russo both had one that contributed in an RBI. Russo also scored twice to help the Bulldogs secure their sweep of their double header.
The Bulldogs moved to 4-3 overall after winning two hard-fought games saturday.
Culver's next game is Thursday, April 12, at home against La pine. The game begins at 2 p.m.
