MHS softball wins crucial game in extra innings.
Madras softball won a crucial game in extra innings, Monday, April 23, against Corbett. The Buffs won 8-7 in extra innings with a walk-off double hit by Cheydon Herkshan.
Corbett took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Faith McQueen hit an RBI double for the Cardinals.
Madras quickly tied up the game with a deep shot to the center field fence for an RBI double from Jiana Smith-Francis, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
The White Buffalos kept things rolling in the second inning. Niyallee Cochran and Delaney Vibbert both hit RBI grounders to short. Lizzie Steuart hit a big shot to deep left field for an RBI double. The Buffs took a 5-1 lead heading into the third.
Cardinal batters Daphne Scott and Molly Stratton both hit shots to shallow right field. Scott's hit scored one run and Stratton's scored two. Kara Moritz followed with another RBI for Corbett off of a White Buffalo error.
The score was tied 5-5 in the third inning.
The White Buffalos and the Cardinals were held scoreless in innings four through seven, causing the game to head into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Cardinals took a one-run lead. Morgan Stafford hit a ground ball up the middle for an RBI double to give them the lead 6-5.
In the bottom of eighth inning, down by one, with runners on first and second, freshman Hannah Holliday stepped up to the plate. Holliday, not shying away from the moment, ripped a shot to shallow center field, scoring the game-tying run.
"I walked up to the plate scared out of my mind," said Holliday. "I turned and looked at coach Donnie and he told me to have some fun, so I smiled and swung the bat and hit an RBI."
"I was so excited, it did not really process until I was standing on the bag, said Holliday. "This was a good game, we know we can beat them now and we hit the ball. It was a close game and we just learned we can pull ourselves out of pressure situations."
That led to the next batter, sophomore Cheydon Herkshan, who stepped into the batter's box. Herkshan hit a hard shot right on the right field foul line to score a walk-off game-winning run in an extra inning for the White Buffalos.
"I am so excited for us and happy we came away with a win," Herkshan said. "I think this game will lead us to make more hits and get some more wins."
White Buffalo softball lost a close game 1-0 in Corbett, Friday, April 20.
Corbett scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning in a defensive matchup.
Lizzie Steuart, who was on the hill for the Buffs, only allowed four hits. She also struck out four batters.
Madras only recorded one error the entire game.
On the offensive side, Niyallee Cochran, Cheydon Herkshan, and Steuart all went one-for-three on the day. Steuart contributed with a double.
"Offensively, we just couldn't connect to make timely hits," said coach Shawna McConnell. "We had lots of routine outs, hit right to people."
"We played without intensity," McConnell said, "possibly carried over from previous losses."
Madras softball lost 11-1 in Gladstone, Wednesday, April 18.
Gladstone scored four runs in both the first and second innings, giving the Gladiators a big lead early on. Madras and Gladstone scored in the fourth inning and Gladstone packed on two more in the fifth.
Smith-Francis pitched the majority of the game, recording two strikeouts.
Senior leader Arysta Pineda went one-for-three with a double. Freshman Delaney Vibbert finished the game going one-for-one.
"Defensively, we played much better than the previous game and offensively we prepared for faster pitching," said McConnell. "We improved our timing, and had fewer strikeouts against this pitcher, but just kept hitting the ball to people." The Buffs are now 5-3 in league.
