Culver's Duff, Knepp, Michael, Keiski earn gold
Culver track and field participated in the 2A-5 Columbia Basin District meet on Friday, May 11.
Catylynn Duff became a district champion in both the shot put (37-00) and the discus (139-09).
The next closest in the shot put was Maddi Muilenburg, of Weston-McEwen (30-00.75), and next closest in the discus was Culver's own Mikayla Haessler (77-05). Duff's and Haessler's discus throws were both PRs.
Emma Knepp became district champ in the 1,500-meter run (5:33.51), beating out Madelyn Nichols, of Heppner (5:35.46).
Kash Michael won the men's high jump (6-00), ahead of Heppner athlete Alex Lindsay (5-08).
The pole vault champion was Hunter Keiski (10-00); teammate Jordan VanAlstyne finished in second (9-06).
The Culver women's track team finished in second and the men's team finished in third.
Weston-McEwen (96), Culver (87), Stanfield (63), Pilot Rock (58) and Heppner (45) competed in the women's track and field districts Friday.
The same teams also competed in the men's track and field districts Friday, with the following results: Heppner (132), Weston-McEwen (87), Culver (65), Pilot Rock (44) and Stanfield (23).
Margie Beeler finished fifth in the women's 100-meter dash (14.94), running a personal best.
Irma Retano finished second in both the 400-meter dash (1:01.63) and the 800-meter run (2:52.44). She lost the 400 to Abby Rigby (1:01.00), of Pilot Rock, by 0.63 seconds and lost the 800 to Katie Vescio (2:31.78), of Weston-McEwen.
Hannah Orey finished third in the 1,500-meter run (6:05.18) and Knepp placed second in the 3,000-meter run (12:26.95). Nichols, of Heppner, placed first (12:24.78).
Bridget Lopez finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (18.40) and third in the 300-meter hurdles (53:93). She also finished second in the javelin (98-09).
Culver's 4x400-meter relay team, including Retano, Orey, Knepp and Mia Gamboa, finished in second (4:34.01).
Talyn Barry placed third in the shot put (29-05) and Kiana Webb finished seventh in the discus (65-09); both throws were PRs for Barry and Webb.
Barry (79-00) and Haessler (76-09) finished in fifth and seventh in the javelin.
In the pole vault, Webb placed third (7-00) and Haessler fourth (6-00). Haessler also placed fourth in the long jump (13-10).
In the men's 100, Kaden Engel placed third (11:97), Kash Michael, fourth (12.26), and Cesar Orozco, seventh (12.79).
In the 200-meter dash, Zach Wiseman finished in sixth (26.54), Jackson Maxwell in ninth (27.65) and Ben Nanez in 10th (28.27).
Clayton Mathews placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.94) and Maxwell, seventh (1:03.01).
Austin Williams finished in seventh in the 800-meter run (2:25.56) and Edwin Gutierrez in ninth (2:46.30).
In the 1,500-meter run, Jake Horat placed eighth (5:05.81). He placed seventh in the 3,000-meter race (11:40.83).
Johan James placed third in the 110-meter hurdles (19.49) and second in the 300-meter hurdles (46.46), which was a PR in both events.
Culver's 4x100-meter relay team of Gutierrez, Michael, Orozco, and VanAlystyne finished in second (46.11). The 4x400-meter relay race, run by Gutierrez, Michael, VanAlstyne and Engel, also finished in second (3:43.00).
In the shot put, Cruzito Sevilla finished in third (36-02.25), Nanez in ninth (28-06.00) and Williams in 10th (26-02.00).
In the discus, Sevilla placed fourth (93-04), Williams, ninth (67-00), and Mathews, 10th (65-10).
Keiski finished in fifth in the javelin (108-00), Sevilla, sixth (105-07), and Williams, eighth (67-00).
Jaimes (5-06) placed third in the high jump and Engel, fourth (5-04).
In the long jump, Jaimes finished in fourth (17-01.50), Orozco in sixth (16-07) and Wiseman in seventh (16-06.50).
