Two Culver wrestlers travel to Las Vegas
Two Culver wrestlers, Lorenzo Vasquez and Brody Piercy, traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, May 26, for a two-day wrestling tournament.
The two participated in a national dual tournament with a team from Oregon, competing against teams from Nevada, Arizona, Idaho and California. Team Oregon won five matches before losing to team Arizona in the finals.
Vasquez competed on the Oregon A team and Piercy, the Oregon B team. Vasquez wrestled at 130 pounds and won five straight matches before losing to an opponent from team Arizona.
Piercy lost all three of his dual matches, all very close scores, while wrestling for the Oregon B team.
On May 27, the two Culver wrestlers competed in an individual freestyle and folkstyle national wrestling tournament.
Vasquez wrestled at 125 pounds and made it all the way to the semifinals before having to wrestle Oregon teammate Zeth Brower, who is a 5A state champion at Crater High School. Vasquez lost his match 3-1, but was not discouraged, winning all his next matches and earning the chance to wrestle for second place.
While wrestling for second place, Vasquez separated his shoulder and could not continue. He ended the folkstyle tournament, earning third place, but could not continue wrestling for the freestyle tournament.
Piercy went 2-0, winning both of his matches in the folkstyle tournament at 102 pounds. He also took third place in the freestyle tournament.
Vasquez is a three-time state champion 2A wrestler at Culver High School. He was selected as 2A/1A Wrestler of the Year by the Oregon Wrestling Forum. He finished the season with a 40-2 record, wrestling at 120 pounds.
