Culver, Madras wrestle to reach top poduim
Culver and Madras wrestling programs traveled to Bend for Saturday's Central Oregon Officials Association Invitational.
Bend, Crook County JVs, La Pine, Mountain View, Redmond Ridgeview, Summit, Crane, Gilcrest, North Lake, Culver, and Madras all competed on Dec. 1.
Mountain View placed first with 182 points, with Culver in second with 125 points. Madras finished the tournament with 56 points, with only four athletes.
The White Buffalos only brought four wrestlers to tournament. Orlando Torres (145), Victor Torres (160), Kody Zemke (220), and David Sumner (285). The Buffs went 3-0 in the opening round, 2-2 in the semifinals and 2-1 in placement matches.
"We made early season mistakes and showed some areas we still need to work on as the season progresses," said MHS head wrestling coach Cameron Mitchem. "David Sumner has made huge gains since last year. He wrestled a couple of great matches this weekend. Kody showed some flashes of what we hope to see on a more consistent level during the season. Victor and Orlando both need to focus more on basic wrestling. The whole team is not in great wrestling shape yet, but we will get there."
Orlando Torres went 2-0 on the day and was able to place first, beating Orlando Frank, of Ridgeview, 8-5. Victor Torres and Kody Zemke both went 2-1, Torres placing second and Zemke third. David Sumner went 1-2 during the tournament.
"Overall it was a good opening weekend," Mitchem said. "Kids were competing hard and encouraging each other throughout the day."
Culver was able to have three athletes reach gold for the Bulldogs. Lorenzo Vasquez (127), Anthony Hood (139) and Cylus Hoke (221) all placed first in the tournament.
Vasquez pinned Nate Jones, of Mountain View, in one minute, 14 seconds. Hood was able to defeat James Anderson, of Bend High, 10-6, and Hoke defeated Daniel Underwood of La Pine 9-5.
Both Brody Piercy (107) and Jordan Piercy (114) reached the championship match Saturday, but both were pinned by their La Pine opponents.
