White Buffs lose to Marist Catholic 78-73, beat Astoria 83-72, Montesano 69-64 at Seaside tourney.

EDWARD HEATH - The White Buffalo boys basketball team poses with their trophy after placing fourth at a Seaside tourney.The Madras White Buffalos basketball team traveled to Seaside for the Seaside Holiday Tournament of Dec. 20-22. The team placed fourth, going 2-1 in three games.

The Buffs played Marist Catholic in their first game and lost 78-73. Madras took an early 8-3 lead to start the game, but the Spartans went on a 14-0 run, taking a 17-8 lead.

The run was stopped by a Kahn Herkshan 3-pointer. The Buffalos went into the second quarter down 23-14.

Marist Catholic was able to outscore the Buffs 23-12 in the second quarter and the Spartans had a 46-26 lead at halftime.

The White Buffalos came out in the third quarter and shot the lights out. A 3-pointer by Dapri Miller and two 3-pointers by Byron Patt helped Madras close in on the Spartans' 51-40 lead.

The Buffs kept grinding and another 3-point shot by Miller made the score 53-51 in favor of the Spartans.

Madras outscored the Spartans 29-13 in the third quarter and went into the fourth only down 59-55.

Another three made by Patt made it a one-point game, 59-58, but the Spartans went on a 12-1 and advanced their lead to 71-59.

The Buffs again were able to fight back and make the score 75-73, in favor of Marist Catholic, but could not capture the lead.

The Spartans were able to make some free throws at the end of the game and defeat Madras 78-73. The Buffs hit 15 3-pointers and were led by Patt, who scored 27 points, making seven 3-point shots. Miller was able to make four 3-pointers for the Buffs and recorded 16 points in teh game.

Big lead over Astoria

Madras played Astoria next and were able to use their big first-half lead to come away with a 83-72 victory.

The Buffs jumped out to an early 16-8 lead and took control. A 3-pointer by Donnie Bagley gave the Buffs a 27-12 lead and later, Kobey Jorgensen was able to score, giving Madras a 51-25 advantage.

Madras went into halftime up 53-27.

In the second half, Cole White hit a 3-pointer, extending the Buffs' lead by 30, 61-31. The Buffs had a 62-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Fishermen were able to outscore the Buffs 33-21 in the fourth quarter, but Madras held on to their lead for a 83-72 win.

Madras had four players in double figures in the game. Bagley led the team with 24 points and was able to hit six 3-pointers. Herkshan added 16 points, while White and Patt both added 10 points.

Buffs hold on

The White Buffalos played Montesano, a team from Washington, in their last game of the tournament and beat the Bulldogs 69-64.

The Buffs took an early lead and a 3-point shot by Bagley gave Madras a 9-2 lead. A 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter by Amial Rhoan gave Madras a 22-11 lead.

Madras outscored the Bulldogs 22-11 in the second quarter and took a 20 point lead at halftime. The score was 42-22 heading into the third quarter.

The Bulldogs were able to chip away at the Buffs' lead in the second half and to the score to 66-62 in favor of Madras late in the game.

But Montesano could not take the lead and Madras was able to hold off the Bulldogs for a 69-64 win.

Rhoan and Bagley scored 15 points each for the Buffs, while Patt added 13 and Chapin Grote scored 10.

Madras moved to 4-5 overall and travel to Bend for the Summit Holiday tournament on Dec. 27-29 at Summit High School.
