MHS baseball loses heartbreaker to Molalla
The Madras baseball team hosted the Molalla Indians April 19 in a battle between two evenly matched teams. The boys held their own through five innings, but Molalla's six-run inning in the top of the sixth sealed an 11-6 victory over the Buffs.
The Indians scored the first run of the game when Jacob Dix hit an RBI single to center field. In the bottom of the first, Israel Penaloza and Carter Dunten were both walked, bringing Jordan Mitchell at the plate.
Mitchell hit a hard ground ball up the middle, scoring both Penaloza and Dunten, and giving the Buffs a 2-1 lead.
Linden Mackenzie hit an RBI double to deep left field, scoring a Molalla run and tying the game.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Indians took the lead back with a line drive RBI single past second base by James Sanders.
Molalla was able to score two more runs in the fifth inning. One on an error and the other on a blooper hit to shallow center field by Carson Donaldson.
Dunten was able to rip a line drive single up the middle to start the bottom of the fifth inning, but the game was put on a 30 minute lightning delay by the umpires.
The Buffalos were able to regroup and focus during the delay, coming out swinging after the short break in action.
Jordan Mitchell crushed the ball to left field for a double, moving Dunten to third base. Liam White hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman and a Molalla error saw both Dunten and Mitchell score.
Trent Mitchell was walked on the next at bat and Jacob Hulsey stepped into the batter's box with runners on first and second. Hulsey hit a two-RBI line drive to left field, giving Madras a 6-5 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Molalla was able to score three runs on two Madras errors. The Indians were able to score a fourth run on a passed ball and Sanders hit a hard ground ball to right field for an RBI single.
Madras and Molalla were both held scoreless in the seventh inning and the Indians were able to head home with a victory.
Damian Dingo and Donaldson pitched for Molalla, striking out eight Buffalo batters. Michael Belgard and Kody Zemke pitched for the Buffalos, striking out four batters.
The Indians were led by Donaldson, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Sanders ended the night 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Madras was led by Jordan Mitchell, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Hulsey went 1-for-1 with a two RBI double. Liam White ended the game 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Madras White Buffalo baseball team played the No. 11-ranked Gladstone Gladiators twice this week and lost 18-4 and 7-0.
In the first game, the Buffalos and Gladiators played Monday, April 15, in Madras, during consistent rainfall.
Madras held Gladstone to only four hits, but committed eight errors on the day. The Gladiators came out strong early, scoring nine runs in the first inning.
Gladstone scored two more runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning, taking a 12-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Gladiators had another big scoring session with six more runs, taking an 18-0 lead. The Buffalos combined for seven of their eight errors in the first and fourth inning and Gladstone was able to score 15 runs in those two innings.
Madras created good offense in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jordan Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Liam White advanced Mitchell with a single to left field.
Reece White was walked and the bases were loaded for Jacob Hulsey. Hulsey hit an RBI single to right field.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kody Zemke stepped up to bat with runners on first and second. Zemke blasted the ball to centerfield for a two-RBI double. But Madras wasn't able to score any more runs, losing to the Gladiators in five innings.
Gladstone was led by Austin Conner who went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Zemke and Hulsey both went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Buffalos, while Liam White and Israel Penaloza were 1-for-2 on the day.
In the second game April 17, Madras held the Gladiators to seven runs through seven innings, but couldn't score any runs, recording four hits as a team.
Gladstone hosted the Buffs and scored their first run in the first inning, when Jake Gerhke hit an RBI double to right field. The Buffs held the Gladiators scoreless in the second inning, but Gladstone scored three runs in the third.
Dawson Wick hit a run home on a sacrifice fly. Later, Mitchell Kuhn hit a two-RBI double to left field, putting Gladstone up 4-0.
Madras held the Gladiators scoreless again, this time in the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, Kuhn drove home another Gladstone run with an RBI single to left field. Gerhke walked with the bases loaded and the Gladiators scored their sixth run.
Spencer Boyd hit home the last run of the game for Gladstone, giving the 2018 state champions the win.
Kuhn led the Gladiators, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Madras was led by Zemke who went 2-for-3, while Liam White and Penaloza both ended the game 1-for-3.
Madras travels to Estacada to play the Rangers at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24. They host Estacada at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 26 and travel to Corbett to play the Cardinals at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29.
