Culver Lady Dawgs lose two, blow out Sheridan twice at home in doubleheader slugfest.

STEELE HAUGEN - Seirra Bautista pitched during the Lady Dawgs' 19-11 victory over Sheridan April 26.The Culver softball team was very active this week and went 2-2, blowing out Sheridan at home twice.

Culver played Santiam April 22, at home and didn't have the firepower to hang with the Wolverines, losing 20-3.

"Santiam played really tight defense," co-head coach Megan Woychak said. "Santiam's bats were really good as we struggled at the plate."

Can't close on Jefferson

The Lady Dawgs traveled to Jefferson April 23, and were able to score 14 runs, but lost 17-14.

"This was definitely a winnable game," Woychak said. "We were very hesitant in the batter's box, but we were able to keep up some pretty good defense."

Striking Sheridan

Culver was ready to get back in the win column facing a Sheridan team at home during a doubleheader April 26.

The Lady Dawgs were ready and pumped for the games, scoring consisitantly in every inning. Sheridan kept things close throughout the game, Culver extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Lady Dawgs had a 16-10 lead and were up to bat. Kinzi Jagels was on second base with Emma Hayes batting. Hayes hit a line drive to center field for an RBI single.

Hayes stole second base and Nena Mendoza hit a grounder between first and second base for an RBI single.

Mendoza stole second base and on a series of bad throws, ended up stealing home plate, giving the Lady Dawgs a comfortable 19-10 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Sheridan hit a triple to start things off and two Sheridan batters were walked, loading the bases with no outs.

Sheridan scored on a bad pick-off throw by the Lady Dawgs and another batter was walked. Jagels, the Lady Dawgs catcher, called time-out and settled down Culver pitcher Sierra Bautista.

Bautista struck out a Sheridan batter and later, Jagels threw out a leadoff runner and third base.

"I said that the missed throws were my fault and the runners were for me to handle and not her," Jagels said. "All she needs to do is release the ball and do the rest. I feel like if I don't try and throw them out, they get comfortable and walk all over me, making me less prepared when they steal. It keeps both me and the runners on my toes."

Another strikeout by Bautista gave the Lady Dawgs another victory.

"I think this game went a lot better and we played more like a varsity team," Jagels said. "We did a couple new signs that we have never done before in this game, which made us a lot more comfortable playing. The team believed in ourselves and our coaches didn't second-guess us."

"The team needs to remember what it feels like to earn a victory and not at our lowest," she said. "We should be playing like we have never won before."

Dominating Sheridan

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady Dawgs showed what they are capable of, beating Sheridan 19-2.

Good defense and a lot of confidence helped Culver pull off their largest win of the season.

"The team played very strong defense and had some really awesome pitching," said Woychak. "We not only had two successfull plays where Sheridan was in a pickle, but also hit the ball very well. Freshman Lindsey Lamb was able to get some great hits in the gaps, hitting a single and a double."

"Kinzi Jagels had some amazing throw downs and Nena Mendoza hit an inside-the-park home run on a couple Sheridan errors," she said. "All in all, we had a great day."

Culver has three home games this week, starting with a doubleheader against Kennedy (10-3 overall, 8-0 league play) at 2 and 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.

The Lady Dawgs (3-5 overall, 3-3 league play) also hostsJefferson (4-10 overall, 3-5 league play) at 4 p.m. Friday, May 3.
