Girls tennis on to next round of districts
The Madras Lady Buffs girls tennis team traveled to Estacada May 2, for the first round of the district tournament and were able to move two doubles teams to the second round.
Jessica and Erika Olivera were seeded the No. 1 doubles team in the bracket and defeated Kaeb/Trujillo, of Stayton, 6-1, 6-2, moving on to round two.
The doubles team of Natalie Ramos and Lorena Macias will be joining the Olivera cousins in the second round after defeating Dominguez and Verbin, of Woodburn, 6-4, 7-5.
Ramos and Macias have a tough task in round two, playing the No. 3-ranked team in More/Xiong, of Cascade.
"Erika and Jessica (Olivera) looked really good," head girls tennis coach Dave Jordan said. "The only sets they lost were the ones they made errors on. They didn't really get beat by anything. Ramos and Macias surprised me a little bit. I knew their match was going to be a good one; they have really played well all year. I am glad they are still in the championship round, but now they face a tough seeded team. They could surprise a lot of people if they play well; they could knock some teams out."
Madras' Kelsey Olivera and Eliana Nambo were defeated by Freres/Szyod, of Stayton, while Kylie Borchert and Destinee Reynoso Canales were bested by Beatty/Nelzen, of Molalla.
"I was a little disappointed in some of the results," Jordan said. "I thought we would do a little bit better than we did and I thought Kelsey (Olivera) and Elaina (Nambo) were going to be able to win their match, but they couldn't follow through on some of the things they were supposed to follow through on."
"They were the better team, but unfortunately didn't show it that day," he said. "They are playing very well in the consolation bracket. If they would have played as well as they have now in the first round, they would still be playing in the championship round."
The two did well in the consolation bracket, making it to the consolation quarterfinals. They continued their play in the second round of districts May 6, past the Pioneer's deadline.
On the singles side, Esme Garcia won her first match over Noemi Castrejon, of Estacada, but lost to the No. 1-ranked singles player from Philomath, Selah Carlisle.
Azucuena Ruiz won her match for the Lady Buffs, defeating Lizbeth Garcia, of Estacada, but fell to the No. 4-ranked singles player, Susanna Anand, of Corbett.
Erica Desjardina lost to Emma Nelson, of Philomath, and Katherinne Parodi was bested by Aurora Villa Juan, of Woodburn.
Desjardins in also still playing hard in the consolation single bracket and after a few victories, is still playing in round two of districts.
