Lorenzo Vasquez signs to wrestle at SOU, Irma Retano playing basketball at EOU

STEELE HAUGEN - Irma Retano commits to playing basketball at Eastern Oregon University, in La Grande, next to parents Irma Rodriguez and Jesus Retano Sr.Two Culver Bulldog graduating seniors who signed letters of intent to play play college sports — Lorenzo Vasquez and Irma Retano — gathered with their families in the Culver High School gym May 30, to celebrate the achievement.

Vasquez may be the most decorated Culver wrestler in history. He is a four-time 2A state champion wrestler and a two-time Reser tournament champion.

Vasquez signed his letter of intent to wrestle at Southern Oregon University, in Ashland.

Retano was a multiple sport athlete, competing in volleyball, basketball her senior year. Her junior year, Retano participated in four varsity sports, doing both track and softball in the spring. However, a knee injury this winter during basketball kept her out of spring competition.

She has an extreme liking for the game of basketball and worked to improve her skills during every off season. Eastern Oregon University, in La Grande, offered Retano an opportunity to play basketball as a Mountaineer.

"They are both role model athletes, student athletes for all of our kids," Athletic Director Shea Little said. "They are both somebody these other kids can look up to and they are continuing the tradition of Culver kids playing at the next level."

"I couldn't think of two better kids to represent Culver," he said. "They have been successful in their sports, a state champ wrestler, and Irma played great basketball for us here. We are excited to see what they do in the future."
