The Madras White Buffalo softball team had several players earn all-state honors.
Madras junior Jiana Smith-Francis earned second-team all-state infield, while senior teammate Niyalle Cochran earned second-team all-state outfield.
Smith-Francis ended the year with a .453 batting average and a .918 fielding average, while Cochran led the team with a .968 fielding average and had a batting average of .403.
Tri-Valley Conference first-team pitcher and TVC Pitcher of the Year, Lizzie Steuart earned third-team all-state pitcher. Pitching in 18 games, Steuart finished the season with a 14-4 record, striking out 69 batters. She also had a .453 batting average and a .925 fielding average.
She signed a letter of intent to play for Mt. Hood Community College next year.
Allie Brock, of La Grande, won the 2019 4A Softball All-State Pitcher of the Year award and her coach, Woody Wright, won Coach of the Year.
Sophomore Delaney Vibbert earned honorable mention all-state infield. She played both second base and shortstop for Madras, batting .375, with a .833 fielding average.
Freshman phenom Marilyn Tom earned honorable mention all-state outfield, having a .778 fielding and .438 batting average.
The Lady Buffs finished the season with a 17-7 record. They will have Smith-Francis, Vibbert and Tom all returning for next season.
Culver SD-2 league honors
The Culver Bulldogs baseball team made the state playoffs for the second straight year and had several conference honorees to show for it.
Junior pitcher Cord Gomes earned second-team all-league pitcher for the Special District 2 Conference. Gomes also played first base for the Bulldogs.
The league included Kennedy, Culver, Colton, Santiam, Western Christian, Country Christian and Sheridan.
Senior captain Tadd Anderson earned second-team all-league for Culver. Anderson played shortstop and second base for Culver, as well as pitcher.
Lalo Gutierrez, a senior, played outfield for the Bulldogs and earned second-team all-league. Freshman standout Brayden Macy hit well at the plate, earning second-team designated hitter.
Seniors Joe Russo and Jamal Ortiz both earned honorable mention honors for Culver. Russo was a catcher for the Bulldogs and Ortiz played third base.
Sam Grosjacques, of Kennedy, earned Player of the Year, and Wyatt Lyon, of Santiam, earned Pitcher of the Year. The Coach of the Year was Kennedy's Kevin Moffat.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a 14-14 overall record, 11-7 in league play. They beat higher ranked Central Linn 13-1 in their first-round playoff game, but lost to Umpqua Valley 13-0 in the second round.
Gomes and Macy will both return for the Bulldogs next season.
Culver softball team
Culver High School saw sophomore Emma Hayes earn first-team utility player for the Lady Dawgs. Hayes was moved to several different positions for Culver, using great fielding in every position.
Senior Nena Mendoza was on the mound for almost every game during the Lady Dawgs' season. She earned honorable mention, as did junior catcher Kinzi Jagel. Mendoza and Jagel were both leaders and captains during the season.
Culver finished the season with a 3-15 overall record and will have both Hayes and Jagel return next season.
