Bicycle riders rest in Madras June 26, during long journey across United States of America.

JENNIFFER GRANT - Bicycle riders stop in Madras during ride from Astoria to Boise, Idaho.America by Bicycle Cross Country Tours came through Madras June 26, on the way from Astoria to Boise, Idaho.

The tour was founded in 1994 by a bicycle enthusiast named Doug Torosian, whose father worked for the League of America Bicyclists.

The league was formed in 1880 by cyclists who demanded that roads be paved, all signing their names on a massive wheel that was presented to Congress. While the league's methods have changed, its vision is the same: uniting cyclists to make biking better.

Seeing his father's work, Torosian decided to start his own tour business. America by Bicycle's passion and specialty is long-distance bicycle touring. The organization prides itself on being able to offer rides that suite all levels, interests and abilities, and caters to each individual cyclist, offering a variety of tours.

The "Across America North" Tour is what brought cyclists to Madras June 26. The full event runs from Astoria, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in only 50 days traveling 3,695 miles. The "Fast America South," from Costa Mesa, California, to Savannah, Georgia, takes 27 days and is 2,885 miles; the "Fast America Ride" from Costa Mesa, to Amesbury, Massachusetts, takes 33 days with 3,452 miles bicycled; and the "Cross Country Challenge" is from San Francisco, California, to Portsmouth, takes 52 days, cycling 3,829 miles.

Not everyone starts and finishes the tours. The cyclists only travel as far as they want. Some join in at a later destination, depending on how far they want to bike.

There are 35 cyclists making the entire 3,695 mile trip. Tour leader is Judy Clawson, who noted "The staff comes back every year because they enjoy supporting the people who are enthusiastic about life and adventure."

So if you are a cycle enthusiast or a beginner, America by Bicycle may have the route for you. If you are up for a challenge, both physically and mentally, start training and check out their website at
