STEELE HAUGEN - Senior Cheydon Herkshan plays in her senior night game against Estacada Oct. 29. Madras lost 1-0 to the Rangers, finishing the season with a 3-11 overall record.
In one of the coldest soccer games of the year, the Madras girls lost to the Estacada Rangers 1-0 on Senior Night Oct. 29.

"We've had a pretty good core group of seniors that we have had since freshman year," said senior captain Kelsey Olivera. "Me, Bris (Briseida Carlon), Jiana (Smith-Francis) and Cheydon (Herkshan), we've grown together a lot throughout the year, especially Briseida. She found a voice, became more aggressive, more of a leader than before."

"We didn't have the best outcome this year, but we did good and had fun. I definitely got to see the lowest points and the highest points throughout these soccer years, playing with my sister Erika (Olivera) all these years," she added. "It was like a roller coaster, and we might be on the down end right now, but I know the team will be on the up end next year."

Both teams were held scoreless in the first half. The Lady Buffalos were able to get a few good looks on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.

In the second half, senior captain Carlon took a shoot that looked like it would be the Lady Buffs' first score of the game, but the ball bounced off the post and back into play.

STEELE HAUGEN - Senior Dom Walker plays in her senior night game against Estacada Oct. 29. Madras lost 1-0 to the Rangers, finishing the season with a 3-11 overall record."We held pretty strong; our attitude was always up, even if we were down like 7-0, we never gave up, said Carlon. "I am going to miss all the seniors. They were all good. I had a good time here. I had a good time with (Shawn) Darrow as the coach. He helped a lot. I miss every girl from my four years here. Never give up, always show up and try hard," she said for upcoming players.

A few plays after the missed goal, the Estacada Rangers were awarded a corner kick. The kick went to the far side of the goal, right to an open Ranger. The kick was open and was good, as Estacada took a 1-0 lead over the Lady Buffs with 33 minutes left in the game.

Both defenses held strong the rest of the game, and Madras couldn't get a game-tying goal as Estacada beat Madras.

STEELE HAUGEN - Senior Kelsey Olivera plays in her senior night game against Estacada Oct. 29. Madras lost 1-0 to the Rangers, finishing the season with a 3-11 overall record."It was just a slow-moving game with the weather being the way it was, but I think Estacada showed they have gotten a lot better," head coach Darrow said. "We had plenty of opportunities, and they did not have a lot that were very close. But all it takes is one corner kick, as we saw. Unfortunately, that was it. It was a tough way to go out, but I am proud of our girls all season, even if it wasn't always friendly on the scoreboard."

"It is a group that we will miss big time in terms of attitude, personality. They came in and worked hard," Darrow said about the seniors. "This was my first group I have had freshman through senior year, so it is a special group and a group that I will miss a lot for sure."

Madras was in one of the toughest leagues in 4A and the Lady Buffalos finished the season with a 3-11 overall record. The girls will have some experience next year.

"I think we have a good group that can step up in some places," said Darrow about the returners. "It is going to be tough to replace the goal scoring from Briseida, and we're losing our keeper, but I think we have players ready to step up: Hannah (Holiday), Brooke (Delamarter) in the middle. Harley (David) played really well and Natalie (Lockey) has played good as a freshman, so we have girls that are hungry and eager to step in."
