Madras Lady Buffalos basketball squad beats Seaside, Corbett at Holiday tournament at Oregon coast.

STEELE HAUGEN - ChaCha Ramirez looks to pass the ball to a teammate. Madras went 2-1 at the Seaside Holiday Tournament Dec. 19-21.The Madras Lady Buffalos basketball squad traveled to Seaside for a basketball tournament Dec. 19-21 and won two of the three games.

Madras played Washougal, a team from Washington, first and lost 49-45.

The Lady Buffs started out taking a 11-6 lead over Washougal in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the game became close and Madras was down 19-18, but a steal by Jayden Davis led to a fast break and Madras took the lead back.

Late in the second quarter, Jiana Smith-Francis made a deep shot from behind the arc to give Madras a 29-23 lead.

Davis took a few dribbles and nailed a 3-pointer the third quarter to break the tie and give the Lady Buffs a 34-31 lead in the close contest.

A few plays later, Dominique Walker scored on a fast break after a Lady Buffalo steal, extending the lead to four.

Washougal came out strong in the last quarter of play, taking a 49-42 lead over the Buffs before a 3-pointer by Sha'Rita Johns cut the lead down to four.

Madras fought hard toward the end of the game, but fell short, losing 49-45.

The Buffs had a high shooting percentage than their opponents, but were outrebounded 41-29.

Against Seaside

After the Lady Buffs loss, they were matched up with the Seaside Seagulls in consolation play. The Buffs and Seagulls had a close first half, but Madras outscored Seaside 23-14 in the second half to seal a 41-31 victory.

Madras was only up by one point in the third quarter, before the Lady Buffalos went on a 9-0 run. The run helped Madras take a 31-25 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Seaside cut the Madras lead down to three in the fourth, but Madras went on an 8-2 run to close out the game, going four-for-four from the free throw line.

Madras' scoring was spread out equally as Smith-Francis and Walker led the way with nine points each. Jayden Davis was right behind them with seven points of her own.

Beating Corbett

The Lady Buffs played the Corbett Cardinals in their next tournament game and after a close first half, Madras outscored Corbett 26-15 in the second half to seal a 58-41 victory.

Madras had a four-point lead near the end of the second quarter before a pair of free throws by Smith-Francis gave Madras a 32-26 lead at the half.

The third quarter was a competitive one. A basketball by the Cardinals late in the quarter cut Madras' lead down to four. The Lady Buffs had a 40-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Madras went on an 8-2 run to start the final quarter of play, extending their lead to 11. Smith-Francis was fouled on a 3-pointer and she made all three free throws. She was fouled again on the next play and made both free throws, giving Madras a 53-39 lead.

Madras went 5-for-6 from the stripe to end the game and defeat Corbett 58-41.

Smith-Francis led the Lady Buffs with 21 points. DaRia White was able to score nine points for Madras and Davis put in eight.

The Lady Buffs moved to 4-4 overall on the season. They do not play until January, where they travel to Banks for a tournament Jan. 2-4.
