Shorthanded Lady Dawgs lose to Sheridan
The Culver Lady Dawgs basketball team took on the Sheridan Spartans at home Jan. 4, losing 64-54.
Culver was short-handed, missing three regular starters. The Spartans took a quick 8-0 lead, but the run was stopped by a Kiana Webb 3-pointer for Culver.
A few plays later, a technical foul was called on the Spartans, which meant the Lady Dawgs would get two free throws and the ball back. Webb made both shots and hit a corner 3-pointer, making the score 9-8, and Culver was right back in the game.
Sheridan closed out the opening quarter with a 10-2 run, and the Spartans had a 19-10 lead over the Lady Dawgs. Kylee McKereghan scored 14 of Sheridan's 19 first-quarter points, the majority of which were on fast break opportunities.
Culver and Sheridan were battling hard to start the second quarter. Karmen Horat hit a pair of free throws and knocked down a jumper for Culver, but the Lady Dawgs were down 26-15.
The teams exchanged baskets throughout the second quarter, and Sheridan had a 32-21 lead at halftime.
The Spartans outscored the Lady Dawgs 17-16 in a close third quarter, but Sheridan held onto a 49-37 lead at the end of the period.
Culver kept fighting hard throughout the fourth quarter of the game but could not make a big run at the end of the game, falling to Sheridan 64-54.
Sheridan moved to 5-4 on the season, and after their loss, Culver moved to 2-8.
The Lady Dawgs travel to Chemawa (3-5) to face the Braves at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, and to Santiam (3-7) to face the Wolverines at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.
