Culver Bulldogs beat La Pine Hawks in dual, lose to Ridgeview; district tournament at Union next.

Culver faced La Pine in the Highway 97 Classic Tuesday, Feb. 4. The Classic is between Culver and La Pine wrestlers, starting with elementary school, followed by middle school and then high school, counting the scores for all the matches.

The varsity dual started at 285 pounds, and Teagan DeForest was able to pin Culver's Wylie Johnson in 42 seconds.

At 106 pounds, La Pine's Olivia Flack was able to win by fall over Debren Sanabria. At 113 pounds, Carmelo Farfeglia won a very close decision over Bulldog wrestler Brody Piercy in a 3-2 victory.

Dylan Mann (120) was able to beat Culver's Noel Navarro in a 9-0 major decision, and the Hawks had a 19-0 lead over Culver to start the dual.

Derek Torres (126) got things rolling for Culver with a fall win at 1:18, and the 132-pound match was won by the Bulldogs due to forfeit, cutting the Hawks' lead down to 19-12.

Anthony Hood (138) needed 3:32 to win by fall, and at 145 pounds, Lane Downing returned to action and pinned his challenger in 2:58, giving Culver a 24-19 lead.

La Pine's Noah Goins won by fall over Gabe Wilson at the 1:58 mark, but Wyatt Corwin (160) gave Culver another win with a close 9-8 decision victory.

At 170 pounds, Isaiah Toomey only needed one minute to pin his challenger, giving the Bulldogs a narrow 33-25 lead over the Hawks.

Landen Roggenkamp was able to defeat Culver's Andreas Mendez by fall at the 3:47 mark, cutting the Bulldog lead to two.

Culver's Eduardo Penaloza sealed the match for Culver by pinning his opponent at 1:39 to give Culver a 39-31 lead. Daniel Underwood was able to win by fall for La Pine, but the Bulldogs varsity team came away with the 39-37 win.

Bulldogs vs Ravens

Former Culver wrestling coach Dan Eliott, who is currently the Ridgeview coach, squared off against current Culver wrestling coach J.D. Alley. Elliott coached Alley when he was younger, instilling a passion for wrestling into Alley at an early age.

Ridgeview won the Central Oregon showdown between the Bulldogs and Ravens in a 40-32 dual victory.

The match started at 126 pounds, and Culver's Johan Jaimes won by fall over Elijah Allen in 1 minute and 50 seconds. The 132-pound match was won by Derek Torres due to forfeit, and Culver took an early 12-0 lead over the Ravens.

Austin Anderson (138) was able to earn Ridgeview's first victory, defeating Braeden Chapman at the 1:53 mark. Culver's Anthony Hood got the Bulldogs back on track with a fall victory at the 4:18 mark, and Culver had an 18-6 lead.

Daniel Jaramillo won the 152-pound match over Gabe Wilson by fall for the Ravens, and Ridgeview's Zach Anderson edged out Wyatt Corwin in a 16-10 decision. Ethyne Reid (170) was also able to win a decision victory for Ridgeview, tying the score at 18.

Ridgeview won the 182-pound match, but Penaloza (195) was able to secure a close 7-5 decision victory. The Ravens won the 220- and 285-pounds matches to take a 34-21 lead.

Sanabria (106) won his match by a 17-2 technical fall, and the 113-pound match was won by Ridgeview, while the 113-pound match was won by Culver due to forfeit to close out the dual.

The Bulldogs travel to Union High School for their district tournament this weekend. The tournament starts at 2 p.m Friday, Feb. 14, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15.
