Free throw champ, Hertel off to regional competition
Madras' own Jackson Hertel, 13, has won three Elks Free Throw contest competitions and will now be competing in the Regional hoop shoot for the Northwest Region 1 held at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington, March 14.
Hertel started his free throw journey in Madras and after winning the contest there, moved on to the district competition in Prineville Jan. 18. There was not stopping Hertel at the district competition as he won that contest and advanced to the state competition in Salem.
Each contest consists of 25 free throw shots. During the state competition Feb. 8, Hertel made 23-of-25 free throws, a 92% shooting percentage from the stripe. Currently the Portland Trailblazers have an 80.2% free throw shooting percentage as a team.
Damian Lillard is shooting 89%, CJ McCollum 74.7%, and Carmello Anthony 85.2%. So a 92% shooting percentage is extremely impressive.
Hertel will be competing against other 13-year old competitors from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. He really appreciates the local lodge for making this opportunity possible. If Hertel wins the regional competition, he will compte in Chicago, Illinois April 18 at the National competition.
