Prizes are being offered during the 5-week MADras Runner Challenge, which runs from April 13 to May 10.

BILLY GATES/THE PIONEER - A dedicated group of 44 runners take off from the starting line of the Canyon Rumble Frozen Half Marathon. Now the MADras Runners are challenging local runners to a five-week event. The MADras Runners group is looking to motivate people to get outside — with safety in mind — exercise, help themselves to better health, and help the community as well.

MADras Runner Challenge, a five-week event, will start the week of April 13 and end May 10. Each week MADras Runners will post a running and walking challenge with a new route, and participants can take to those routes at their own schedule, anytime during that week.

There is no charge to participate in the event — and you could win a prize for taking part.

Along with putting some fun into what can be, for many, a somewhat depressing time of coronavirus shutdown, the Challenge has another goal of helping local businesses. MADras Runners has purchased $300 in gift cards from local businesses and will be awarding those cards to entrants via a drawing upon the Challenge conclusion.

Anyone who participates in any of the weekly challenges is eligible to win a gift card. It doesn't matter how fast you run or walk the route. The drawings will be random.

Those who complete all four challenges will be entered in the grand prize drawing for a $100 gift card to a local business. Winners will also get a free entry into the MADras Runners signature race, the Canyon Rumble Frozen Half, 5k or 10k, next winter.

Entrants will have one week to complete the weekly route, and can take on the routes at a time that fits their schedule.

To enter, participants can create a free account on the app Strava and log their run or walk on the Strava app or website. When participants record their walk or run with the Strava app, it will be recorded. MADras Runners will monitor the Strava route and record names into the drawing.

Those who don't want to mess with the app can simply take a picture of themselves on the weekly route and email it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The group will trust that those entrants finish the entire route.
