Another big weekend for the MADras Runners Challenge
The showery weekend didn't slow participation in the fifth leg of the MADras Runners Challenge.
The multi-course participation event — designed to help local families stay active during the Coronavirus shutdown — was initially designed to last four weeks, but has been expanded due to its popularity.
This week's final course — the B Street Stomp — takes participants from Sahalee Park in downtown Madras, up B Street Hill to Juniper Hills Park, then once around the park and back to the park.
This past week's course showcased the fishing poind at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, and the west Madras trail. Organizers called it the Fish Pond Jaunt.
Each week, one Challenge participant has won a random drawing for a $50 gift certificate at a different Madras-area business. This past week, Austin Cooper won the $50 gift card, which was to the Madras Co-op. The local Youth for Christ organization contributed the prize, plus an additional $30 gift card for a partipating teen, and Maija Poland won that drawing.
"Uusally we only had one or so teen take part and this week we had 16," said event organizer Jamie Hurd.
Along with addressing the stress of the COVID-19 shutdown, the local running club was also hoping the event would draw attention to the importance of shopping local and helping local businesses.
A grand prize of a $100 gift card to Grocery Outlet will be draw among those who participate in all of the now at least six challenges.
Each week during the event, the MADras Runners post a running and walking challenge with a new route, and participants can take to those routes at their own schedule, anytime during that week. The program is designed to motivate people to get outside — with social distancing safety in mind — exercise, help themselves to better health, and help the community as well.
There is no charge to participate in the event.
Anyone who participates in any of the weekly challenges is eligible to win a gift card. It doesn't matter how fast you run or walk the route. The drawings will be random.
Along with $50 gift card, the weekly winners will also get free entry into the MADras Runners signature race, the Canyon Rumble Frozen Half, 5k or 10k, next winter.
Entrants will have one week to complete the weekly route, and can take on the routes at a time that fits their schedule.
To enter, participants can create a free account on the app Strava and log their run or walk on the Strava app or website. When participants record their walk or run with the Strava app, it will be recorded. MADras Runners will monitor the Strava route and record names into the drawing.

Week 6- B STreet Bomber
This route will start at the corner of B and Seventh streets, next Sahalee Park. Take the sidewalk on the south side all the way up B Street to Juniper Hills Park. At the park, enter the park trail at the top of the hill next to the Juniper hills park sign. This is not at the main park entrance but the pedestrian entrance west of the main entrance. Continue on the trail in a counter clockwise fashion. Make one lap around the park and exit the park where you entered. Continue back to Sahalee Park on B Street. Continue down B Street on the sidewalk on the south side of the street.
The MADras Runners will be awarding a club hat to the individual who runs the uphill section of the challenge the fastest. To be eligible for this, an entrant must be registered with Strava and mark their time with the app.
This week's $50 prize is courtesy of Tina's Treats. The announcements of the grand prize, the $100 gift card to Grocery Outlet, will be May 25.
