College of Idaho athlete places in both weight throw and shot put in national indoor championships; West Region's field athlete of the year

Catylynn Duff, a 2018 Culver High School graduate, is shining on the track and field team for the College of Idaho.

Duff was one of four Yotes to receive All-American honors following the 2021 NAIA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Yankton, South Dakota, March 2-6.

Duff placed eighth in the shot put, throwing 43 feet, 3.5 inches. She backed that up with a sixth-place finish in the weight throw event, reaching a mark of 56 feet, 4 inches.

Duff, the school record-holder in the weight throw, was on the verge of not making a finals until making a qualifying heave on her last effort.

Duff, along with two College of Idaho coaches, were also recently honored by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association with West Region indoor track and field honors.

Duff was named the West Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year after a season in which she ranked No. 2 in the NAIA in weight throw and No. 9 in shot put. Head coach Austin Basterrechea was named West Region Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year and assistant Zach Barclay was named West Region Men's Indoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year.

Under Basterrchea, the Yotes were ranked No. 1 in the West Region and 17 nationally heading into the national championship meet. Along with Duff's points, teammate Abbey Shirts took seventh in the 1,000 meters and anchored the 4x800 relay team to a third-place finish and school record at nationals.

This is Duff's third season at the Caldwell, Idaho, school. At Culver, she was a three-time 2A state champion, winning the discus title in her junior and senior seasons, adding the shot put crown as a senior.

As a freshman in college in 2019, Duff earned All-conference honors and qualifyed for the NAIA Outdoor Chamionships in the discus. She was second in the Cascade Conference Championships in the discus and fourth in the hammer throw as a freshman.

In 2020, as a sophomore, Duff qualified for the NAIA Indoor National Championships in the weight throw, taking 10th overall. She set a school record in the weight throw, going 17.44 meters at the Boise State Team Challenge. She was named to the Cascade Conference All-Academic Team and a NAIA Scholar Athlete.

Duff is studying health and human performance at the C of I.
