Grayson Symons and Talise Wapsheli represent the Buffs at state cross country event

TONY AHERN  - Talise Wapsheli hits the finish line in a meet in Madras earlier in the cross country season. Two Madras High School runners competed in this weekend's unofficial Class 4A state cross country championships, which were held at Marist High School in Eugene.

Senior Grayson Symons finished 52nd in the boys race with a time of 18:51.6, while freshman Talise Wapsheli placed 62nd in the girls race with a time of 23:57.4. Ethan Hosang of Sisters was the individual winner in the boys race with a time of 15:26.7. Patrick Clayburn of North Valley placed second in 15:58.8, while Will Thorsett of Sisters was third in 15:58.8.

Despite putting nobody into the top five in the race, Siuslaw won the boys meet with a score of 70. Philomath finished second with 77 points, while Sisters took third with 81 points. Rounding out the team scoring were Hidden Valley, 96, Tillamook, 134, Phoenix, 147, Marist, 189, Baker, 197, La Grande, 207, Molalla, 252, North Marion, 317, and Astoria, 320.

Anika Thompson of Junction City won the girls race with a time of 17:57,3, while Ella Thorsett of Sisters placed second with a time of 18:22.4. Sarah Pullin of Tillamook was a distant third in a time of 19:25.4.

Siuslaw swept the team scoring, winning the girls race with a score of 81. Rounding out the team scoring were Sisters, 87, Baker, 89, La Grande, 117, Tillamook, 119, Phoenix, 146, Philomath, 151, Klamath Union, 153, Marist, 176, Estacada, 259, Astoria, 300, and Corbett, 346.
