Strong meet for resurgent program as 12 qualify for defacto state meet, which will be held this weekend

LON AUSTIN - Matty Buck gives it her all during the discus. She finished second in the the event in the Tri-Valley Conference District Championships, held in Madras May 14-15.
The Madras High School track program hosted the Tri-Valley Conference championships on Friday and Saturday, and showed everyone just how good a team they have become.

After years struggling to place in meets, both the Madras boys and girls teams finished second at the district meet. Perhaps even more impressive, when you add the boys and girls scores together, Madras was the clear winner.

"I am very proud of the way our 'trackletes' competed," said Madras head coach Kip Briggs. "While our conference doesn't present a trophy for combined victories, our combined team was undefeated this season including the district meet. Our combined scores topped the rest of the conference as they have all year. I am extremely proud of that fact."

Estacada won the girls meet with 157 points. Madras was second with 129. They were followed by Gladstone, 119, Molalla, 103, North Marion, 80, and Corbett 40.

The boys meet was won by North Marion with 178.5 points. Madras was close behind with 159.5 points. They were followed by Molalla, 147, Gladstone, 60, Estacada, 56, and Corbett, 41.

The lone individual winner for the White Buffalo girls was Illiana Hance, who threw the javelin a personal record 102-04 to take first in the event. Hance was also third in the high jump, 5-02, fourth in the triple jump, 29-05.50, and fifth in the shot put, 26-10.50.

Hannah MacDuffee, running in the event for the first time this year, came from back in the pack to finish second in the 1,500 with a time of 5:20.90. "It was truly a community effort with teachers, administrators, parents, student athletes and coaches all pitching in.
