Madras football hosts No. 1 Estacada on Thursday night; Culver volleyball looks to rebound at Gervais

PMG PHOTO: ANDY DIECKHOFF - A busy week in Jefferson County prep sports includes Madras hosting No. 1 Estacada in football on Thursday.

Here is a quick preview of the prep sports going on for the Buffs and Bulldogs this week:

Thursday, Oct. 7, 7 p.m.

Madras (2-2) v. Estacada (5-0)

Coming off last week's loss to Ridgeview, the Buffs have their work cut out for them as they host No. 1 Estacada. The Rangers are undefeated, have score 30 or more points in every game and have won each contest by at least two touchdowns. The Madras defense needs to hunker down.

Thursday, Oct. 7, 7 p.m.

Culver (0-4) @ Gervais (0-5)

The Bulldogs might have their best chance at a win all year when they meet up with the Cougars, who are also winless. Gervais is coming off its closest game of the season, a 26-12 loss to Harrisburg last Friday. If Culver can clean up the turnovers, a win may finally be in the cards for CHS.

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 5 p.m.

Culver (7-7) @ Gervais (4-10)

The Bulldogs look to right the ship after two losses in the Tri-River Conference last week. They will face a Cougars team that they beat 20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 back on Sept. 7. Gervais has dropped three straight league games.

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 4:30 p.m.

Madras (1-7) @ Estacada (2-7)

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 6 p.m.

Madras @ Estacada — Match 2

Monday, Oct. 11, 6 p.m.

Madras v. North Marion (6-5)

The Buffs are hustling to get back up to speed after missing a week of action due to COVID-19. The long week continues with a varsity double-header at Estacada. The Rangers have struggled on the year, much more so than Madras' Monday opponent, North Marion. The Huskies are coming off a win in straight sets over Corbett.

Monday, Oct. 11, 5:30 p.m.

Madras (3-4-1) v. Molalla (4-4-0)

Madras looks to stick to its winning ways in a league match against Molalla on Monday. Earlier in the season, the Buffs fell 6-0 to the Indians on the road. This time, Madras is hosting and should have a strong effort in store for their guests.

Tuesday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m.

Madras (1-7-0) @ Molalla (3-4-1)

The Buffs' improving defense will be put to the test again when they travel to Molalla on Tuesday. The Indians bested Madras 6-1 in the first match between the schools, but Shawn Darrow's defense has taken strides since that time.

Thursday, Oct. 7, 4 p.m.

Madras XC @ Mustang Invite

Jess Swagger takes the team to Heppner for a midweek 5K race. Juniors Hannah MacDuffee and Isaiah Wapsheli lead the way for the Buffs' cross country team, with both of them among the many Madras runners to set personal bests at the Oxford Classic in Bend last weekend.

Saturday, Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m.

Culver XC @ Mariman Invitational

The Bulldogs will take a 'championship mentality' into their next race, the Paul Mariman Invitational in Philomath. The boys team is coming off a very good showing, earning the third-highest team score at the Oxford Classic on the backs of five sub-20:00 times. The girls are also running well, with Olivia Rydman leading the way. Ninth-grader Audry Rake was not in action in Bend, so she will be looking to get in on all the recent fun by setting her own new PR.
