The Bulldogs outperformed projections and earned their second team trophy in as many weeks.

The Bulldogs placed fourth.Just days after earning the school's first-ever cross country trophy, Culver is bringing another one home.

Behind inspired efforts from the whole squad, Culver took fourth place at the OSAA 2A/1A Boys Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Despite being projected to finish eighth based on their season race times, the Bulldogs placed fourth after registering a team score of 125, just two points back from third-place Heppner. Union won the 2A/1A state title with 39 points, followed closely by Bandon, which scored 43. Knappa was the closest team to challenging Culver's fourth-place bid but fell short at 132 points.

Earlier in the week, Culver head coach Carter Spear mentioned that he had seen the projections but remained optimistic that his team would outperform them.

"If we're projected to get eighth, we want to at least get fourth or fifth" said Spear following the team's first-ever district championship. "We got sixth last year, so I'm hoping. Fourth place would get us a trophy."

Carrying the 'champion mindset' that has lifted them throughout the season, the Bulldogs ran their hearts out and ended up with the hardware they coveted.

Senior Evan Powell led the Bulldogs as he has all season, placing 28th overall thanks to a time of 18 minutes and 53.3 seconds. Powell had been hoping to set a new personal record in his final race, but he came up shy. Still, he maintained a sub-19:00 time in four of his last five races to help lead the charge for his team.

He was joined by his brother, Julian, as well as Thadius Brown.Debren Sanabria was next for Culver, setting a personal record with his time of 19:03.3. Sanabria placed 33rd overall and was followed in quick succession by Hudson Burgi (19:03.9, 34th), Troy Potampa (19:06.8, 36th), Thadius Brown (19:09.4, 38th) and Aiden Guest (19:16.0, 40th). Brown's time was a personal record, and freshman Julian Sanabria (26:50, 68th) also set a new PR during the race, eclipsing the 27-minute mark for the first time.

Though Powell and Potampa will now move on, both have left indelible marks on the Culver High School history books in their senior season. As for the younger crew of runners, they just got a taste of success at the state's highest levels and look poised to continue filling up the trophy cases at CHS.
