OSAA tabs Culver High School to host state wrestling tournaments
State championship wrestling will soon be coming to Culver High School.
In a departure from the traditions of years past, the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) has decided to hold state tournaments at different sites, rather than housing all of the events under the spacious roof of Portland's Memorial Coliseum.
While the 6A and 4A boys tournaments will be held on the west side of the mountains at Sandy High School and Cascade High School, the remainder of the events will take place along Highway 97 in Central Oregon.
Most notably for Jefferson County, a number of events will be hosted by Culver High School. The Bulldogs will be running the 2A/1A boys tournament, as well as the girls tournaments for all six classifications.
Additionally, the 5A boys tournament will be held in Redmond at Ridgeview High School, while the 3A event is scheduled to take place at La Pine High School.
For a sport that has always had a soft spot for big farm-fed kids, putting so many events in Central Oregon feels appropriate.
Culver athletic director Alex Carlson noted that he was excited to have CHS host the events, and he also expressed optimism about the financial benefits for the region of having so many big events in Central Oregon.
As for Culver wrestling coach J.D. Alley, the Bulldogs' longtime head honcho feels confident that the school will put on a great event in February. He noted the recent success of the Culver Invitational, which included upwards of 500 matches between nearly 30 schools, a bigger undertaking than any of the state championship events will be.
