Houston Wittenburg connects for five touchdowns with three receivers as Dawgs top Santiam

TONY AHERN - Quarterback Houston Wittenburg (2) talks with coach Brian Silbernagel earlier in the season. On Friday, Sept. 16, Wittenburg threw five touchdown passes to lead the Bulldogs to a 32-20 win over Santiam.Quarterback Houston Wittenburg threw five touchdown passes Friday to lead the Culver Bulldogs to a 32-20 road win over Santiam Friday.

Logan Macy caught two of those TD passes, Kelin Abbas caught two others, and Roger Sotelo caught one.

Culver jumped out to a 14 lead, punching in a TD in the final minute before halftime. However, the Wolverines stayed alive with a touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff.

In the third quarter, though, the Bulldog defense took over, controlling the line of scrimmage and making several defensive stands.

Meanwhile, the Bulldog passing attack continued onward, notching three more TD passes in the second half.

The win put the Bulldogs at 2-1 on the year, and gave them a Tri-River Conference victory, tying them with Regis and Willamina for the league lead with 1-0 records. The only team to beat Culver this year is Weston-McEwen, which is 2-0 and ranked No. 1 in the 2A OSAA poll. Culver is ranked 10th.

Willamina comes to Culver for a Friday night showdown this weekend. The league is setting up to be a dogfight among those two teams plus Colton (ranked third) and Regis (ranked ninth).

"It's still early and we aren't focused on the rankings. We are focusing one game at a time and to play a physical brand of football," said coach Brian Silbernagel. "Willamina is a good team that will test our secondary through the air."

Silbernagel said that, as is usually the case, it will come down to which team best controls the line of scrimmage.
