Two late goals give Madras a 2-0 win, avenging their only loss of the season so far

TONY AHERN - Madras goalkeeper Javier Castro pitched a shutout against the Estacada Rangers in a 2-0 White Buffalo victory. Eben Tapia and Steve Gonzalez scored the goals for the Buffs, who are now 7-1 overall and ranked fourth in the state. In the Tuesday, Oct. 11 Tri-Valley Conference showdown between its two top boys soccer programs, the host Madras White Buffalos prevailed 2-0. Eben Tapia broke the physical, defense-dominated scoreless tie with a top-shelf goal with about five minutes remaining. After a Buffalo corner kick, junior defender Damian Fuentes served a ball into the box, where Tapia took it away from an Estacada defender with a slide tackle, pushing the ball into the upper left corner of the goal in the process.

Olivera crossed the midline and beat a Ranger player to the ball, which Olivera booted deep down the sideline. As the crowd cheered the defensive play as a time-killer late in the 1-0 game, Tapia chased the ball down the sideline and got into position to boot in the clincher. The win put the Buffs at 7-1 for the year, and avenged their only loss, a 5-3 defeat at Estacada on Sept. 20. Madras went into the game ranked fourth in the state's 4A rankings and Estacada, now 6-3-1, was ranked sixth. Buffalo goalkeeper Javier Castro had an excellent game. Estacada's best scoring opportunities occurred in the first half, but Castro made several saves, including taking a hard shot to his face by a ball kicked about five yards from where he stood to defend. Along with Castro's solid play and a strong Madras defensive effort keeping them scoreless, Estacada just missed on a couple of good shots that went over the bar.
